What Happened to Our Manners?

I’m tired of rude people and their horrible children

There it was, just staring at me.

I live in an apartment complex. There are three floors in my building with about six or eight people living on each floor. We all share the same two washers and dryers in our building.

Usually, I don’t have an issue with it. I try to do my laundry at weird times so I don’t have to wait for a machine.

With that being said, I have noticed a recurring issue in my building.

For some reason, people are not emptying the lint from the rack in the dryer after they use it. I make sure to check it every time to make sure it’s clean.
About half the time if not more, it’s covered in lint from the previous load.

Instead of taking it out and taking the ten seconds to clean it and put it back, people in my building are choosing to let the next guy do it.

It may not sound like a big issue.

In the grand scheme of things, it’s not.

However, having to clean up after someone else is never fun. I live with adults, not children that need to be watched all the time. That’s what makes it so frustrating.

I have thought about doing it myself a few times because why not get some revenge. I haven’t yet. I can’t go to that level after writing an article about how terrible it is when people do it.

Unfortiunelety, this is how people are. Everyone thinks about themselves the whole day.

They spend 90% of their time awake thinking about what they have to do, their problems, and how to make life better for themselves.

This is not inherently wrong. It may sound rough on the surface, but it’s the truth. I think most people have come to accept this fact about our fellow humans.

It is what it is.

However, something as easy as cleaning the dryer doesn’t get a pass for this.

People need to have better manners in life. Manners seemed to have left the Earth a long time ago.

Nowadays, people do whatever they want. They don’t clean up after themselves. They have no issues with talking on their cell phone in the library.

The words “please” and “excuse me” are no longer part of their vocabulary.

I feel like the old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn right now.

Maybe I’m just a grumpy old man in a younger person’s body. That could be, but I don’t think so.

I blame parents.

Kids today have no respect for authority. They throw things at teachers, don’t respect their parents or other adults, and have no manners.
The reason is that parents are too lenient with their kids when they are younger. They cave too easily to their requests. They always have their back when someone accuses them of doing something wrong.

I understand they want the best for their children, but not instilling discipline in them is not what’s best for them or society. The parent’s job is to prepare their kids for living and contributing to society.

Their job is NOT to be their child’s friend.

A prime example of bad parenting was super clear yesterday.
While watching my cousin’s basketball game, there were five kids on the side of the basketball court messing around close to where I was sitting.

They were probably around ten or twelve years old, maybe a few years younger. They were loud and annoying. Their parents were nowhere to be found.

As the game progressed, their behavior got worse. The ringleader of the group, a taller kid with his hood on, was escalating things. He began poking someone else watching the game with a pencil.

I saw it the first time it happened. The adult woman didn’t do anything. She most likely felt embarrassed to say something or maybe thought it was an accident.

The second time he did it, she moved over so that he couldn’t reach her as easily.

This is where I started to get mad.

He then walked over to her and poked her for a third time with the sharp end of her pencil. One of the friends of this woman was upset too. She yelled at the kid and asked the adults around us if this delightful young boy was their son.

No one claimed him.

Again, where are his parents in this situation? They are not even close enough to see what’s happening? What if someone picked him up and left?

They should be embarrassed that their kid is in public stabbing strangers in public because he thinks it’s funny.

After the friend yelled at this kid, he stopped for five minutes. Then he went right back to it.

This time, he started throwing trash at them. Broken pencils, beat-up erasers, anything he could get his hands on.

I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t have even thought of doing anything like this when I was a kid. The audacity to act like this in public is sickening.

This time, the friend of the woman got up and got right in his face.

She screamed at him in front of the whole place that he needed to stop or she was going to find his parents. At this point, the game was almost over and we were about to leave soon anyway.

I don’t doubt that the kid would have persisted given more time.
It’s kids like this that either end up in jail, dead, or end up leaving lint in the dryer at apartment buildings.

It’s time to get some manners and take accountability for our actions. Parents need to realize that their kid isn’t perfect. Stop taking your son’s side every time the teacher at school says they are misbehaving.

You are only hurting your kid and society if you don’t check their behavior from the beginning.

Make sure your kid is held accountable for their actions.
It will make the world a better place.
