How Did People Avoid Awkward Eye Contact Before Phones?

One of my many thoughts from today.

I was at work when I walked passed the same person for the fifth time that morning. I feel like most people know exactly what I am talking about.

It’s that feeling you get when you've already said hello to someone multiples time the same day, and then you see them again. You try not to make eye contact with them so you can avoid saying hello again.

Maybe I’m just weird, but this seems to happen to me a lot and I hate it.

I did have my phone in my hand. As soon as I saw him, I immediately buried my face in my phone and pretended to look at some urgent text message. The funny part is that he did the same thing.

As this trick is my go to in these types of situations, I wondered what people did before phones. Did they just suck it up and make direct eye contact with the person they didn’t want to see? Maybe they stopped and pretended to tie their shoes.

Perhaps there wasn't a need for this and people just hello and ignored each other. Maybe they didn't need to pretend to have some kind of distraction to look at.

Maybe they faced their fears and challenges head on.

We use our phones and other means of distractions to shield ourselves away from things we don’t want to be involved with. It could be a tough phone call, conversation, or a daily chore.

Instead of facing it head on, we often bury our heads in our phones in the same way as when we are trying to avoid someone. The problem with this is that the thing we are avoiding will eventually come back to poke its ugly head.

Tomorrow, my goal for the day will be to not walk all day with my phone in my hand.
