How do you view yourself right now?

Are you happy with the person in the mirror? If you feel like you are capable of more in life, then perhaps you are missing out on the power of positive thinking.

With all the negativity and fighting in the world today, we all need to remind ourselves to think positive.

Affirmations can help you with that.

What are affirmations

Affirmations are the positive things that you tell yourself. Most of us do the opposite of affirmations. You may fall into this category.

You may tell yourself that something is too hard, that x person is better than you, or that you know you’ll fail.

This is dangerous because the mind takes these thoughts literally. If you tell your mind that you are not good enough, it will conjure up images and thoughts to prove it.

On the other hand, if you repeat your affirmations daily and believe them, your brain will have no choice but to give you evidence to back that up.

Why are affirmations important?

As talked about briefly above, affirmations can have a great impact on you.

You’ll act the exact same way as you see yourself. If you believe you are disciplined, you will take disciplined actions. If you believe you can never lose weight, you will continue to eat at McDonald’s.

Affirmations can be used to make you better at anything you want. Athletes have been known to use them to improve their craft. Muhammad Ali may be the most famous for it.

He once said the following:

“It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief. And once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.”

He wasn’t going around saying “I am the greatest” for no reason. Ali understood the power of affirmations. He knew that belief came first, then the work, and finally the results.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

Isn’t this the same as wishful thinking?

Hell no.

I could end this section here, but let me explain more.

Wishful thinking is when you think about how nice it would be to have more money and then do nothing. In this example, it is the belief that you can’t be a millionaire that is prominent.

When you believe that you can earn more money, you will take action in line with that belief. You’ll work two jobs. You’ll go back to school to make more money. You’ll try to start a business.

This is the key difference between affirmations and wishful thinking.

One leads to nothing. The other leads to actions being taken. You decide what you want to do.

How can I write affirmations?

1. Think about what you want to be good at

If you don't know what you want in life, it’s hard to get better at it. Do you want to be better at finances? Maybe you want to be a better spouse/significant other?

Think about what needs to be improved in your life.

2. Start off small

Let’s say you want to be better at controlling your money. Write down “I am in control of my money.” or you could start with “I am disciplined with my money and save often.”

It’s that simple. Then, you can create a budget. Keep saying those daily and stick to your budget. You’ll then be acting on your beliefs. Do this long enough and the results come next.

3. Focus on the weaknesses in your life

For example, if you believe you are not capable of being a good leader, you can say “I am confident in my ability to perform under pressure”

4. Make it about the present

Write in the present tense. “I am” is better than “I will.” Believe you are what you want right now.

I gave you more than 15, but I enjoy thinking positive and got carried away.

Negative thoughts and emotions have destroyed many dreams. You now know the best tool to combat them.

You will still fall off the wagon. When this happens, you’ll have your list of affirmations to look at. This will remind you of how great you are and all the things you have in your life to be grateful for.
