A short story from college
Classes were finished early in the afternoon. I headed up to my friend’s dorm room, and would most likely be there for the remainder of the day into the early hours of the next. But first, I stopped by the liquor store to pick up some Vodka and Tequila. I already knew how the night would play out; all their hopes and dreams of getting a girl to come to the room would be over by ten or eleven at night.
I arrived at the house, and my four friends were already conversing about “Tinder.” I hated this dating app, although it was more of an app for one-night stands. All my friends did was swipe right on every girl’s picture that came up on the screen and hoped she did the same on their picture. If she did, then they could message the girl and try to sleep with her. It was just a game, as a lot of girls don’t even respond. Instead, they just see what kind of male attention they can get on the app.
Nevertheless, John felt like tonight was going to be the night. I immediately got a sense of Déjà vu. I started pouring out shots for everyone to take while they sat in a circle, furiously swiping on their phones, not even looking up to greet me. I asked how their day was and got some unrememberable responses.
My friends continued to converse with one another, trying to see who knew which girls and if they would be down to come to hang for the night. A couple of shaky leads ended quickly. The swipes never ceased. Since I don’t have Tinder, I used my time to make drinks and go on social media while I let them try to figure everything out.
Finally, 1030 pm came and I was once again in a room with myself and four other men and no females. I didn’t mind this. I felt like we could have fun without only getting together for the sake of trying to get laid. Frank, on the other hand, was becoming increasingly upset about this fact. Once eleven came around, he was threatening us by saying he was going to his other friend’s party if we didn’t get girls soon. Of course, we couldn’t go with him, as we didn’t have a good ratio of guys and girls. John and the others began to try and calm Frank down by telling him that one Tinder match wanted to come through for the night and wanted to bring her roommates.
Midnight came around, and still no girls. Frank was fed up and left. John and another friend decided to follow in his footsteps and took an Uber to a party on the other side of campus. Dan managed to wiggle his way into some other party a few blocks away. He asked if I wanted to go, but I was sick of the game. I was left alone in my friend’s dorm for the rest of the night. I didn’t mind though. I couldn’t wait for the weekend to be over.
